Explainer: How to Order Free COVID-19 At-Home Rapid Tests

The United States Government has officially launched Covidtests.gov to deliver free COVID-19 rapid tests to millions of Americans across the country.

Here are the quick facts:

  1. You can visit Covidtests.gov or special.usps.com/testkits to order test kits today

  2. Only 1 kit can be ordered per household/address – each kit will includes 4 rapid tests

  3. If you live in an apartment, please make sure to include the apartment or unit number in the delivery address

  4. Tests will start shipping in late January through the United States Postal Service (USPS)

What if I need more than 4 tests?

Starting January 15th, your private insurance plan, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Plan will reimburse at least some, if not all, costs for up to 8 rapid tests that you buy personally (Vox). In addition, there are more than 20,000 testing sites open across the country that you can find on Covidtests.gov as well.

How accurate are rapid tests?

The accuracy of rapid tests depends on your viral load, or how much of the coronavirus is in your body. A positive result generally means that the test has found enough viral particles to assure you have COVID-19 and are contagious. (Wexner Med)

However, a negative result does not necessarily mean you don’t have COVID-19. False negatives are common when you test too early and a rapid test has failed to detect enough of the virus. To ensure you don’t have COVID, test again 1 to 2 after, or try to get tested with a PCR at a testing site. (Wexner Med)

To ensure the most accurate test results with a rapid, test once you have symptoms or 5 to 7 days after exposure if you are fully vaccinated (CDC).

Rapid tests are one of the best strategies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, especially when used correctly and frequently, so make sure you order your kit today.
