WhatsTrue Crew is an intergenerational community of volunteer journalists, community leaders, organizers, and individuals like you who care deeply about the South Asian American diaspora. As the first South Asian American grassroots effort to curate civic engagement resources and monitor mis- and disinformation on WhatsApp, the Desifacts.org team and volunteers work collaboratively to stop the spread of harmful content and build digital literacy skills through multigenerational organizing and community education programming. 

How to join: 

  1. Fill out our official WhatsTrue Crew intake survey here!

  2. Share any mis/disinfo claims, or any content you're not sure about, to the Desifacts.org hotline ((202) 240-8742) on WhatsApp.

  3. Get access to resources, articles, and content addressing civic engagement, digital literacy, public health, policy, and immigration, created and curated by the Desifacts team!

  4. Participate in monthly digital literacy workshops and in-person volunteering events!

Writers’ Circle

We started Desifacts to combat the widespread disinformation and misinformation in South Asian American communities, particularly on digital spaces like WhatsApp. We envision Desifacts.org growing into a trusted fact-checking website and resource for our communities. As part of this vision, we're excited to offer paid volunteer positions as part of our Writers' Circle and help fact-check viral misinformation.

Our volunteer positions:

  • Writers: write articles for Desifacts.org based on specific misinformation claims

  • Translators: translate articles into South Asian languages to increase language accessibility of the website

    • Currently looking for translators for Hindi, Bangla, and Tamil

Requirements and Details:

  • Attend monthly meetings on current issues and article needs where topics will be discussed and assigned

  • All article topics should relate to issues and mis/disinformation affecting South Asian American communities specifically

  • Volunteers should have a background in journalism or expertise in particular topics such as healthcare

  • Time commitment is flexible and will vary month to month

  • Article Word Count: 300 - 600 Words

Rates:

  • Writers: $200 Per Article

  • Translators: $100 Per Article
